How important are auto shows to the industry?

Are auto shows necessary?

With the LA Auto Show set to begin this week, and Detroit’s North American International Auto Show beginning in January, this is a prime time to gauge the health of automakers around the world.

It’s no secret that the U.S. companies are facing their lowest sales numbers in a quarter-century, and their presence at these shows is a potent indicator of that.

Check this out: GM cancelled all vehicle unveilings at the LA show, in addition to canceling all planned news conferences. Chrysler is forcing local dealers to pay for the company’s exhibition space, won’t debut any new vehicles and has cancelled all news conferences.

Ford meanwhile has no plans to cut back, and will debut the 2010 Mustang complete with an extravagant party. They will also debut 5 other models including 2 new hybrids. It would appear, based on this information alone, that Ford is the strongest of the Big 3.

For the Detroit show, GM has announced that it has cancelled their traditional pre-show kickoff media party. Chrysler is considering cutting back or eliminating their legendary Detroit Firehouse party. Even foreign companies Ferrari, Rolls Royce, Land Rover and Suzuki have pulled out of the Detroit Show completely. Volkswagen cancelled their press conference and concept car debut for the LA show and rescheduled for Detroit.

The auto show industry is known for extreme extravagance, so I say all this with one question in mind:

Are auto shows a necessity for automakers or an expendable marketing luxury?

Ford is wasting no time in allowing its customers to modify the new 2010 Mustang. In fact, they are so anxious to get started that visitors to the LA Auto Show will be able to digitally customize their own version of the pony car right on the show floor. A total of 43 accessories will be available, from wheels to spoiler to hood scoops. Wheels will be available in a variety of finishes, and body parts will come in black, silver, or body color. A carbon fiber package will even be available. Taking it a step further, Ford will have the crew from Galpin Auto Sports on hand to pick a design every hour and actually install the parts on a V6 convertible and a GT coupe to provide a real life look at the car. More details are in the press release after the jump, and if for some reason you haven't already seen them, you can check out photos of the 2010 Mustang in the galleries below. Stay tuned for our live coverage of the LA Auto Show beginning later this morning.

10 Steps for Buying a New Car

901196_driverIs it that time to look for a new car?  Whether your old one died on you, or you’re just looking for something new to keep up with the great technology, there are several options out there.  Although, there are also a few steps you should consider when searching for a new car.  Buying a new car can be a very expensive task, so we want to make sure we get the most for our money.  Listed below are some tips and advice you may want to consider when purchasing your next vehicle.

1.) How much? – First of all, what is your budget?  Set a goal price you want to get away with spending, and a max that you’re not willing to spend over.

2.) What kind of car? – Do you have an idea of what kind of car you want?  Look online at a few of your favorite auto manufacturers and see which vehicles you like best to get an idea.

3.) What am I looking for? – What are you looking for in your vehicle?  Does it have to have the latest technology, or could you care less?  What things are a must for your next car?

4.) Any specials? – Once you have an idea what kind of car you want, and what you want included with your car look around for specials and/or discounts.  There are several dealerships out there that must compete, see who has the best deals for what you want.

5.) Looking around – If you’ve found some good dealerships go up there and see what they have to offer.  Ask the salesman what specials they have going on, and tell him what you’re looking for.

6.) Look at a few – Once you find a vehicle you like, look at a couple of them.  See which ones are the best deal for the price.  Compare them all by color, mileage, year, features, etc.

7.) Test drive - Once you find a car you like out of the few, test drive it.  When you drive it you should feel comfortable and feel like “this is what I want”, if you don’t get that feeling, keep looking.  Or, test drive the other ones you were looking at.

8.) Search – Once you find the vehicle that feels comfortable to you, search it.  Look for any scrapes, scratches, stains, or any wear and tear in the vehicle.  If you see any, be sure to point it out to the salesman (that way you can maybe lower the price.)  Also, make sure everything works in the car!

9.) Negotiate – When you find the car that you’re truly happy with, try and negotiate the price.  Never settle for the going price.  At least knock off a few hundred or ask for something you may want like new wiper blades, tires, etc.

10.) Paperwork - Once you’ve settled on a price, be sure to carefully look over the paperwork.  Make sure you know how much your monthly payment will be, the total cost with tax, and make sure you’re not signing anything you don’t agree to.

Buying a new car can be pretty stressful, although if you take it step by step, make sure you do your research, and you get it for the right price, it’s not that bad.  Just don’t rush, or settle for anything less than what you want!

Top Gear Australia 02×01 Finally Released

Oh what a day. It started with the Scene releasing the rip 15 minutes after I went to bed (I had stayed up hours waiting for a release) and culminated with Mininova’s new content filter sticking our torrent in the moderation queue where’s it’s been now for hours.

Luckily the guys over at EZTV are awesome and we are happy to announce that we will be teaming up with them in the future. In addition to merging torrents (that means more seeders for both of us), they will be hosting our .torrent files for us as well.

Our site will need some reworking in order to link to the torrents hosted by EZTV rather than Mininova, so here’s a manual link for now: http://f.zoink.it/4a08e4ed

Update: After more than 12 hours, Mininova finally approved the torrent. You can find it right here.

‘32 Revver

With the H.A.M.B. Drags coming this weekend, I figured it was appropriate to feature a vintage drag car of some kind. I dug through my vintage archives looking for something unique to rap about and came across the above ‘32 roadster. I have no idea where the images came from and am not clear on all the details, but the car’s character won me over… and here we are…

Included in the directory with these fives images was a text file with the following data:

- John Hanson. North Bend, Oregon
- ‘55 Chrysler Hemi rapped to 8,500 RPM
- Herbert Cam, Joe Hunt Mag, Jahns pop-ups, 14 to 1 compression, 6 ‘97 carbs
- ‘41 Cadillac gear box
- Lincoln brakes
- Pirelli recaps
- Turned 120.67 mph at McMinnville, Oregon in 1960
- Painted stock Chrysler Naples Orange

The pictures, as poor as they are, provide a few more details. It looks like that old Caddy gearbox is shifted through an early Vette shifter, a Halibrand quick change makes gear selection simple, and a Bell 4-spoke handles the direction.

The little roadster is a perfect example of simplicity - big motor, little everything else. Haul ass with purpose.

“Don’t call it a Hot Rod”…

(Note: I’m back from Wenndover along with the rest of the happy souls, but rather than pounding more salt in your eyes with another Bonneville post, I’ll leave it to Ryan to bring you more Speed Week love tomorrow.)

The first time I saw “don’t call it a Hot Rod” by Dick Shaw, I was so taken back by the great illustrations, that I didn’t even bother to read the article! You see, I love vintage cartoons, pen and ink illustrations, graphic design, and so forth, but looking through most 50s hot rod and custom magazines there were precious few pieces of quality art. Stroker McGurk is obviously one of my favorites (see my avatar), but aside from Tom Medley’s killer pen work, its rare to find much else in vintage car magazine art, besides a tiny speed shop ad logo here and there.

The Dick Shaw drawings are fairly simple, but full of gesture, and just the right amount of detail that shows you he knows his cars. With his clean line work, they are downright charming. Oh, the article? Read it if you have time- Its pretty good too. Its from 1951, back when Hot Rodders were still trying to gain acceptance as true automobile enthusiasts with well built cars to show for it…

Officially Official: The new Nissan Cube! (JDM, with U.S. tease)

Click above for high-res gallery of the US-market Cube. Click here for the JDM car.

Here it is. It's "tomorrow" in Japan, and Nissan has unleashed the motherlode of new Nissan Cube photos - including three showing the U.S.-Spec version that'll be rolled out at the LA Auto Show tomorrow. There's no accompanying press release at the moment, but the Japanese media is running their stories as we speak. JDM Cubes are equipped with a 107-hp/109 lb-ft 1.5L four-cylinder mated to a CVT transmission. Front- and four-wheel-drive versions are available. We'll get a different engine with more power that should deliver fuel economy in the Versa neighborhood. More on that tomorrow from our team in LA.

The three shots of the U.S.-market bodywork show, as expected, the reverse of the JDM car. Kudos to Nissan for doing a second body for left-hand drive markets. Inside, the simple appointments of the current Cube are updated with better shapes and, hopefully, a bigger, more upscale mix of materials. The bench seat returns in the JDM car, and there's no reason to believe we won't see it here as well. A water-droplet theme introduced in that silly teaser video we showed you last week is present in the cupholders and also available as ceiling trim inside the passenger compartment. Check out the galleries below for photos of just about everything, including the Japan-specific Lifecare (disabled access) and Autech Rider versions.

Come back tomorrow, when the gang in LA will deliver live coverage of the U.S. car's debut. We liked the JDM version, and we're really looking forward to trying out the Cube again now that it's been engineered for our market's needs.

Fuel Efficient Saturn Vehicles for 2009

Today a fuel efficient vehicle is almost a must.  We no longer accept vehicles that come with a low gas mileage like we used to.  Every car company is working hard to make sure they supply us with a fuel efficient vehicle.  With how much driving we do to go back and fourth to work and to run errands, it would be silly to consider a non fuel efficient vehicle.  We want to make sure we get the most from our money, and the last thing we want to do is waste our paychecks at the gas pumps.

If you’re looking to get a new vehicle in the near future, you may have considered Saturn.  Saturn is a great company that has some very impressive cars.  They are known for making reliable cars with nice features, and a great gas mileage.  If you consider them for your next car, see what kind of gas mileages you’ll receive.

  1. Saturn Aura – This is a beautiful car that has become very popular by our drivers.  It has a nice style, an affordable price, and gets 33 MPG!
  2. Saturn Astra – If you’re looking for a great crossover that gets an excellent gas mileage, be sure to consider the Astra that gets 32 MPG.
  3. Saturn Vue – We love our SUVS, and this SUV really is something.  It has a very nice style to it for an affordable price, and gets an awesome gas mileage for an SUV being 26 MPG!
  4. Saturn Sky – Looking for a luxury sports car, or even a convertible that gets a great gas mileage?  Those are definitely hard to find but Saturn managed, the Sky gets 25 MPG.
  5. Saturn Outlook -  Here we have another great SUV with excellent gas mileage, how does 24 MPG sound for an SUV?

Saturn is really a great company with some awesome vehicles.  They have a great selection to choose from, and you can count on a great mileage for every single one!

Purchasing Used Truck Guide

Purchasing a used truck can be a pain in the butt if you don’t know what you’re doing.  Thankfully for the Internet, you’re going to have access to a lot of great resources, and information.  If you’re in the market to buy a new, or used truck, I wanted to point out a few pointers that you should follow in order to find the perfect truck suited for your needs.

Do your research: The first thing that you want to do on a truck is by researching it.  Read consumer’s reports, and other publications like that to see what the truck is all about.  You’ll want to know how safe the truck is, what kind of gas mileage it gets, etc.

Read outside of publications: You can’t always rely on the media, as there are other options as well.  Read message boards, and forums to see what the actual owners think of their truck.  It’s always great to get the media’s opinion, as well as someone who drives it.

Get an auto check: When you’re looking for a used car, always make sure you get an auto check report.  This report is going to show you the history of that vehicle.  You’re going to get everything from an odometer reading, to if it’s had any flood damage, etc.

Get a mechanic: Whether you’re a mechanic, or you know of someone that can help, make sure that you get a second opinion before you go out, and purchase the vehicle.  By doing so, a mechanic will show you any potential damage that could be had.

Test drive it: Test driving is crucial when you’re looking to buy a used car.  Make sure that you take it down a side road, a main road, and a highway.  By doing so, you’ll be able to test it at all different speeds.  A car may make some noise after it hits 55, and if you don’t get up to this speed, you may never know about it.

Do a full check: When test driving the truck,  make sure you try out everything.  Test the A/c, the windshield wipers, etc.   The more you test, you more you’ll know about the car.  It’s always better to be safe, than sorry.

By following these tips, you can be rest assured that you’ll be able to find a great truck.  Run these tests, and hopefully you’ll be able to find your dream truck at a reasonable price.

What does the SEMA Show tell us about the auto industry?

2007 Lamborghini Murciélago LP640

2007 Lamborghini Murciélago LP640

The SEMA auto show ends November 7 in Las Vegas.

SEMA, the Specialty Equipment Market Association, draws some of the greatest minds and hottest products in the auto industry. The show features new and old cars, modified with the best in aftermarket products.

With the economy in the tank and fuel prices recovering from their highest points ever, does this year’s show feature ways to save money on you car?

Well, let’s take a quick look at some featured cars and make an assumption:

2009 Ford Mustang GT

Supercharged with air/water intercooler; high-flow air filter; exhaust headers; high-flow catalytic converters with race exhaust; lightened flywheel; high-performance clutch.

2007 Lamborghini Murciélago LP640

Capital 19×9 front and 20×13 rear forged three-piece wheels; Pirelli tires.

2006 Chrysler 300 Touring

Dodge Viper V10; T-56 six-speed manual transmission.

2003 Infiniti G35

GT Motorsports engine; 502 horsepower with 10 pounds of boost; ZEX nitrous system; candy apple red carbon-fiber valve covers and battery covers.

2008 Dodge Challenger SRT8

JBA exhaust and header system; Paxton supercharger.

2008 Ferrari F430 Scuderia

4.3L V8 engine; 503 horsepower and 347 lb.-ft. of torque; F1 paddle-shift transmission; Singh Autosport ECU upgrade; prototype race exhaust.

I’m not going to lie and say I don’t think these are cool. Spectacular even.

But I ask you: Is this a sign that even those in the auto industry have yet to wake up to the reality of our economy and fuel usage?

PCH, Suspension Of Ferrari Disbelief Edition: Mustrrari or Integrrari? [Project Car Hell]

Welcome to Project Car Hell, where you choose your eternity by selecting the project that's the coolest... and the most hellish! Yesterday, we were not quite shocked to see the backyard-turbo'd VW GTI obliterate the rod-knockitty Toyota FX16 by a 76:24 margin in the Choose Your Eternity poll. Today we're going to consider the Fauxrrari, and- just to make it more interesting- we're not considering Fiero-based cars. That's right, no Fierraris!

You've got your Fauxrraris based on Fieros, or Corvettes, or 280Zs, or even Mitsubishi Eclipses. But say you want the reliability and VTEC power of a Honda product in your Fauxrrari? Sure, sure, it's front-wheel drive, and maybe that makes a Ferronda even more of an abomination in the eyes of Ferrari purists, but horrifying the purists to the point where they have to start dumping extra anisetta shots in their espresso just to maintain the will to live… well, that's why we're here, isn't it? Of course it is, and that's just one of many excellent reasons for you to purchase this 1994 Acura Integra with 'Ferrari F430 conversion' (go here if the ad disappears), which sports a totally reasonable asking price of a mere $2,500. The seller says "everything on car is perfect," but then his or her ironclad sense of honesty compels the following semi-disturbing qualification: "its stalling MILDLY on 2345 gear and when on 60mph wont let me go higher its not tranny cuz wen in neutral i press gas and it struggles so it might be senors or m.a.p sensor which online is 70$." You see? The stalling is mild; get a new MAP sensor and it's good to go! Of course, you'll need to jack up the horsepower to Ferrari standards, so that you'll be able to torque steer your way into the nearest ditch justify that fine, fine pure Bondo bodywork, which means adding turbocharging and intercooling until the combustion chambers are hotter than the surface of the sun.

You could definitely have some fun in an Integrrari, since it would actually be pretty quick and all, but the Fierrari guys will point to your front-wheel burnouts and laugh and you can't have that! If you're going to spend the staggering sum of several thousand bucks on a Fauxrrari, it's got to be rear-wheel-drive, right? What you're looking for, my budget-minded supercar-seeking friend, is a genuine Mustrrari, built on Ford's protean Fox platform. When you've got a Fox, every junkyard in North America will seem like a comprehensively stocked superstore to you, and you want cheap aftermarket performance parts? Whooo-EEEE! You can turn a Fox into a 200 MPH deathtrap performance machine for nickels and dimes, my friend, nickels… and… dimes! "But did anyone ever make a Fox Ford Ferrari kit?" you might be asking, and it turns out the answer to that question is definitely a big 10-4, with this yellow Mustrrari (go here if the ad disappears) as the proof. We don't know the year of the chassis (in fact, it might not even be a Fox, though that's the way to bet), and we don't know the engine size, transmission type, nor anything else of any value to potential buyers, since the seller doesn't wish to divulge that sensitive information in the Craigslist ad. All we know is that "someone just needs to go over the body again, fix the engine, and 'freshen' everything up." How hard could it be?

Which Fauxrrari shall it be?
( surveys)
