Four-Links - vintage offroading, full-size Thingie, odd Ahrens, one-family Curtiss

flyin' 57 Ford at the 1980 Mexicali 250

* Wes Kibble over at offroadaction.ca emailed us this week, letting us know about his site, which we really dig. He focuses on vintage four-wheeling - everything from Baja to sand drags - and while we knew there was definitely some history there, we didn’t know there was this much history to the various off-road sports. F’rinstance, check out the flyin’ ‘57 ‘58 Ford above from the 1980 Mexicali 250 race.

fiberglass full-size Thingie

* Another tip came in this week from Marc Tyler, who recently got into slot car racing and thus has been poking around slotforum.com, where he came across this thread dedicated to creating a full-size Thingie, a type of blow-molded slot car beloved by vintage slot car fans. The full-size version was apparently built for an art exhibition, not for a running, driving car, but we could see that being the next logical step.

1927 Ahrens-Fox

* We can always count on BigLorryBlog to bring the odd, and they did so this week with a 1927 Ahrens-Fox shown at the HCVS London-Brighton Run. Apparently one of eight ordered by the Rotterdam Fire Brigade, it’s one of seven to survive. Looks like it could have been the inspiration for the Blastolene guys.

1909 Curtiss motorcycle

* A rather remarkable story comes with this 1909 Curtiss motorcycle profiled recently on The Vintagent. Apparently it was only in use for eight years, then stored for 40, when the nephew of the original owner tried to restore it, but abandoned the project and placed it in the attic of a house that the family would later abandon. Only when the family went to sell the house last year did they haul the Curtiss down and decide to sell it at an auction taking place today in Minneapolis.

old Pure Oil Products service station

* Finally, it was a good week for fans of old-timey service stations. Vintage Sports Car Review had a post on them, as did Custom Sickles Diaries. If anybody knows of a mega-gallery of old service stations, I’d love to see it.
