Making a Car Donation

Whether you have a car laying around, or you simply want to donate your older car, there are many ways that you can donate your car today in order to not only help someone else out, but you’ll also be able to get a nice tax break as well.  When you’re looking to make a car donation, here are some tips that you can follow, to ensure yourself that you find the perfect charity.

Find a charity

The first thing that you want to do is find a charity that is registered as a charity.  If the organization isn’t registered, you’re going to find that you won’t get the tax breaks.  Use websites like CharityNavigator.org to find a charity of your choice.

Know the value of the car

Before you head to the charity site, you’re going to want to know the value of the car, because they are going to ask you this.  You won’t want to go too high, nor will you want to go too low.  If you go to high, you may get in trouble with the IRS.  Try websites like KBB to get the value of your car.

Always get proof

When it’s time to donate your car, always make sure you get some sort of receipt showing that you actually donated the car.  If you fail to get this, you won’t have proof that you traded it in for a tax credit.

After you donate your car, make sure that you alert your insurance company, so that you don’t have to insure it anymore.  After all is said and done, you’ll not only donate to a great cause, but you’ll help someone in need as well!
